SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

The extraordinary wealth of material that is now available and freely accessible through the World Wide Web made this book possible. Of particular use was Google Books, a service that provides access to many rare and esoteric volumes from North American universities in a digitized and searchable format. In the pre-Internet age, it would simply not have been possible to identify, locate, and read such a wide range of useful resource materials.

Also invaluable were the newspaper archives that have been digitized. The Globe and Mail’s electronic archives were a superb source of primary, day-to-day information about Canadian economic and financial life since 1844. Accessible through the online services of our public library, they allowed us to search for material by both date and key word.

Of course, the book would not have been possible without access to the archives of the Bank of Canada. We were given unrestricted access to all of the Bank’s documents and materials, an opportunity for which we are very grateful. Documents from the Bank’s archives are identified in the footnotes by the acronym BCA. Similarly, material obtained from Library and Archives Canada is identified as LAC.

The Bank of Canada Library was another vital resource for books on currency and banks. We also made extensive use of their interlibrary loan facilities when we had to consult a hard copy of a rare book.
