Author’s Note
Without a doubt, these were the most horrific conflicts ever fought. Despite the scale of the wars, their hardships and astronomical casualties, many people who lived through it, look back on it as the most significant days of their lives. It was the battlefront campaigns, the front line or home front camaraderie, wartime romance and eventual victory.
This excitement and camaraderie was often bought at a terrible price. Many soldiers who fought in these wars never spoke about their experiences to their friends and family. For years after, many took to drink to dull the grief they felt for their fallen brothers, or to blot out the memories of the terrible things they’d done to other men. Survivors of the war sometimes felt a heavy grief and guilt for having come home alive when so many other men had perished.
Those who fought, and those who lost family and friends like to think that they were fighting for a better tomorrow. The Cold War that followed WWII and the nuclear standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States was a bleak end to the conflict. But the idea of a world controlled by Imperial Japan and the inhuman regime of Nazi Germany is truly a haunting one.
My goal in writing this book is twofold. First, it’s meant to entertain and teach about a time in history that we should never forget. We should always keep the memories of these deeds fresh in our minds, so we can never allow them to be repeated.
Second, I believe we can teach history from a storyteller’s perspective. Instead of rote memorization of endless facts, figures, names and places, why not show what happened from those in the trenches, skies and on the seas? This is the type of history and story that I plan to tell. If you enjoyed reading this book, I encourage you to write a review.
