At the Beach

Natural Backdrops

Fortunate photographers have easy access to ponds, lakes, rivers, and the ocean—maybe even waterfalls—as portrait settings. Tammy is particularly fortunate—her studio is a couple of miles from the Pacific Ocean beach where she posed the Fate family.

The sun was behind the girls, so Tammy illuminated them with a 580EX II Canon speedlight.

Two Sisters

The teens held the dog’s leash and stood close together in the surf. The slightly overexposed ocean view behind them looks as though it was painted in. From a variety of shots, this is the best because it shows the closeness of the girls. Portrait recipients expressed their delight about the setting and how much the two sisters look alike.

The sun was behind the girls, so Tammy used a 580EX II Canon Speedlite set +22/3 to brighten shadows, while beach details show clearly.

Enter the Father

Dad did varying poses with each daughter and Tammy flash filled each shot to tame the shadows. She framed tightly to eliminate background details and accentuate their relationships. Her 24–70mm lens was set at 60mm for the father-daughter pictures because the camera at that distance would show their faces without distortion. Posing Dad on one side and then the other gives each portrait its separate identity.
