Cash’s mother brought a couple of classic, stylish outfits to the studio for his session. For variety and a lighter portrait mood, Tammy added her knitted sock monkey hat and diaper cover for an amusing image. The hat frames his bemused expression beautifully and adds a pop of color against the plain white backdrop.

For the portrait below, Cash was posed tummy-down on an air mattress. For the facing-page shot, Tammy propped him on a chair, rendering the furniture as a posing aid and a rich, more traditional background that is well suited to the baby’s stoic expression.
Discuss clothing possibilities with your clients. Find out if they want to bring special outfits—perhaps something fun, casual, and bright—for their child’s session, and encourage them to consider doing so. Conventional clothing for children, not only babies, may be their choice, but it’s not very distinctive.
Depending on a child’s age, you might seat him or her in a small chair, use pillows to hold him up, or have the mom wear dark clothing and hold the child. Try posing a mom and child in a corner you decorate or on a couch where poses can vary.
