BirdLand Theatre is a non-profit Toronto-based performing arts company. They promote the art of live theatre through dynamic productions, intensive actor training and outreach programs. Their aim to move forward the vitality of Canadian Theatre by collaborating with artists from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

BirdLand Theatre productions explore humanity and the human condition and are guided by the highest standards in every aspect of creative work. Artistic Producer Zorana Kydd founded the company in 2002 following the completion of her Doctoral Studies in Theatre at The University of Toronto, The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama. The company won six Dora Awards one for Assassins by Stephen Sondheim and five Dora Awards and nine nominations for The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Actor Conservatory at BirdLand Theatre is a training residency for professional actors to be immersed in Bird Land Theatre ensemble, values and methods. Performer’s energy is readily identifiable quality. What is interesting is the way this power is moulded in a unique context: the theatre. Studying the performer’s energy, therefore, means examining the principles which performers can use to model their muscular and nervous power according to non-daily modalities.

The purpose of BirdLand Theatre training is both the physical preparation of the performer and his or her personal growth above and beyond the professional level. BirdLand Theatre Conservatory teaches a way of controlling performers body to acquire physical intelligence.
