Black Ensemble Theater (BE), Founded in 1976 by the actress, producer, and playwright Jackie Taylor, has grown from a small community arts Organisation to a vibrant nationally and internationally renowned arts institution. Black Ensemble Theater is recognised as one of the most diverse theatres in the USA, producing excellent musical theatre.

On November 18, 2011, BE celebrated the Grand Opening of the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Centre, the theatre’s first permanent home located at 4450 N. Clark Street, in the heart of Chicago’s Uptown neighbourhood.

The company is known for productions related to African-American culture, especially musicals depicting notable African-American musicians and performers.

The company is a significant contributor to Chicago's emergence as a Theater Town, and its theatre has been selected as one of the 25 top major theatres in the USA by the Encyclopaedia Britannica Almanac.

The Black Ensemble Theatre’s theatrical productions and educational outreach programs have been featured in the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, The New York Post. Some of their most popular productions include “The Jackie Wilson Story”, “The Other Cinderella” and “Don’t Make Me Over: In Tribute to Dionne Warwick”.
