Founded in 1995 in New York City, deep ellum ensemble is a multidisciplinary performance group creating original theatre works from a variety of sources.
Their use of a cappella singing, chant and choral speech, Tanztheater, various non-western performance elements and their native Southern storytelling all combine for a wholly unique aesthetic.
Under the direction of Matthew Earnest, the ensemble has presented its work at various New York venues, including WAX, the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, Raw Space, Washington Square Church, One Dream Theater, Context, The Ohio Theater, Chelsea Arts Theater, NADA, and on tour/in festivals in New Orleans, Louisiana; Berlin, Germany; Dallas, Texas; Rhinebeck, New York; Dublin, Ireland; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
