Gate Theatre

Gate Theatre has a distinguished reputation that far exceeds its size. It is London's only producing theatre dedicated to international work.  From humble beginnings, it has developed a significant renown throughout London, as well as nationally and internationally.

In 1979 the Gate was founded by Lou Stein, over the Prince Albert pub, in Notting Hill Gate. It set about a unique pursuit of the original, of plays and playwrights unknown on British stages, and of artists whose talent deserved to be discovered.

With an average seating capacity of 70, the Gate is small but ambitious. The space has challenged and inspired directors, designers, writers and performers for over 30 years, making it famous for being one of the most flexible and transformable spaces in London.

Gate is a springboard - they aim to give emerging artists the opportunity to take risks, to excel and to make their mark.

Gate Theatre have been home to a variety of both established and emerging artists including Lez Brotherston, Kathy Burke, Dominic Cooke, Wolfgang Goebbel, Sir Peter Hall, Ed Hogg, Richard Hudson, Paterson Joseph, Sarah Kane, Alex Kingston, Jude Law, Nancy Meckler, Katie Mitchell, Sophie Okonedo, Emma Rice, Ian Rickson and Rachel Weisz.

Since 2001, the Jerwood Young Designers scheme at the Gate has encouraged the very best of British theatre design, by nurturing emerging designers and celebrating theatre design as an art form in its own right. As one of the most flexible and transformable studio spaces in London, the Gate's small and asymmetrical auditorium has been an inspiration for designers for 30 years.

Gate dedicated to producing the most innovative international playwrights. They welcome unsolicited script submissions of international and translated plays.

For over 30 years, the Gate has been a powerhouse in British theatre, serving as a unique engine-room for talent. From directors at the early stages of their careers to exceptional actors, writers and designers all eager to create innovative and inspiring work, the Gate has always been a home for the spirited and anarchic souls of British theatre

They accept plays in English from non-British writers, including those from North America,  Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Southern Ireland, and plays translated from any language and any corner of the globe.
