Kali Theatre

Kali Theatre was founded in 1990 by Rita Wolf and Rukhsana Ahmad to encourage, support and promote new theatre writing by women from a South Asian background. Since 2002 its Artistic Director has been Janet Steel.

They seek out original writers who challenge our perceptions and focus on content and ideas as much as on style to present memorable theatre based on challenging and innovative ideas. Of all the new plays by British Asian woman playwrights performed since 1988 in the UK, nearly a third have been presented by Kali.

Kali’s unique nurturing of novice playwrights through Writer Development Programme enables new writers to be discovered and encouraged while giving them support and enhanced skills to develop their work.

It has won rave reviews, sell-out performances and inspired audiences all over the UK with original and thought-provoking theatre writing that reflects and comments on lives today.

“ the most enjoyably inventive piece of theatre I've seen this year “

“No theater could sanely flourish until there was an umbilical connection between what was happening on the stage and what was happening in the world.”
