One Year Lease Theater Company’s ensemble is composed of 8 actors, 4 designers, 2 dramaturges and 1 director. In recent years the ensemble has created innovative productions of Sarah Kane's Phaedra's Love Brendan Cowell's Bed, Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, Clay Mcleod Chapman’s Teaser Cow, Sladjana Vujovic’s The Tender Mercies, Daniel Keene’s The Killing Room, and Danny Mitarotondo’s Manmade Mistakes in New York City.
In addition to building full productions, the ensemble works together throughout the year training frequently as a group, building devised work, doing public reading series, workshopping various pieces with established and emerging playwrights, and leading OYL’s apprentice program in northern Greece.
The actors of OYL come from diverse backgrounds including the USA, Greece, Australia and New Zealand. Trained in diverse methodologies, OYL’s actors have worked extensively in the professional arena, both in theatre and in film.
The members of the acting and design ensemble have worked with: New York Theater Workshop, The Delaware Theater Company, The Virginia Stage Company, The National Theater of Greece, The Sydney Theater Company, The Melbourne Theater Company, SITI Company, The Public, Capital Repertory Theater, The Cherry Lane Theater, The Hudson Shakespeare Company, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and more.
One Year Lease Theater Company founded in 2001 by Ariane Barbanell, Ianthe Demos and Jacqueline Kristel.
They create work that explores the contemporary world through the lens of the ancient past, commission playwrights to develop work in response to their contemporaries and advocate ensemble-based performance. Their aesthetic is defined by specific physical vocabularies, absurdist tendencies, visual landscapes, and dark comedy.
Founded in 2000, OYL has produced over 18 shows and toured six productions internationally. OYL commissions contemporary playwrights from around the globe to create specific, collaborative new theatre texts.
Their annual season in New York City consists of two full productions every spring. Every OYL season begins with a month-long residency in Papingo, Greece, where workshop current and future projects.
