Materials

Yarn

Mandarin petit from SandnedGarn (cotton)

50g (134oz) white no. 1001

White linen: 72 × 22cm (2834 × 812in) and 72 x 42cm (2834 × 1612in) to the front piece, 72 x 42cm (2834 × 1612in) to the back piece.

3mm (size 11) crochet hook

NB: The pattern measures 12 squares in width and 21 squares in height.

Finished size: 40 × 70cm (16 × 28in)

In filet crochet you crochet from a diagram. Each open square equals 1 dc and ch 1. Every filled square equals ch 2.

Central work:

Row 1: Ch 24.

Row 2: Ch 2 (equals the first dc in the pattern) + ch 1, then 1 dc in first row’s 22. Ch + ch 1. Continue with 1 dc + ch 1 in every other row on row 1, the rest of the row. You should have 12 squares altogether.

Row 3: Ch 2 + 1 and continue as the diagram shows until you have three roses and four leaves.

When the diagram shows a black square, crochet 1 dc instead of ch 1.

Finish with one row of open squares as in the beginning.

Sew in all loose ends, then pin crochet fabric out to measure 10 × 70cm (4 × 28in). Cover with damp tea towel and gently press with steam iron or spray with water – DO NOT SOAK and leave to dry.

Assembly:

Fold the fabrics for the front double (NB: thread directions the same way) so they measure 11 x 72cm (414 × 2812in) and 21 × 72cm (814 x 2812in). Sew along the sides, press (iron) the seams apart, cut off excess fabric in the corners and reverse. Press (iron) the work. Attach the finished central work to the fold of the linen fabric with pins and sew with a small overstitch. Fold one of the short edges to the back piece and sew.

Place front and back pieces right sides together and sew together, leaving one side open.

Press (iron) the seams apart, cut off excess fabric in the corners and reverse the work.

Crochet 6 cords to tie up with: ch 41, turn, skip ch 1 and crochet sc back.
