Castle with steeples

Materials

White wool fabric: 62 × 52cm (2412 × 2012in)

Yarn

Mitu from Rauma Ullvarefabrikk (alpaca/wool)

100g (312oz) sheep white no. 0010

3.5mm (size 4) needles

Finished size: 30 × 50cm (12 × 20in)

Diamond Pattern:

To get the diagonals of k st to tilt to the right or left, the stitches have to switch places. This is done using a cn.

SR means switch right; place 1 st on cn behind the work and knit the next 2 sts on the left needle k before you knit the st on the cn p. This is 3 sts.

SL means switch left; place 2 sts onto the cn in front of the work and knit 1 st on the left needle p. Knit the 2 sts on the cn k. This is 3 sts.

CO 110 sts. Knit back and forth.

Row 1 (right side): P4, SR, SL, *p6, SR, SL*. Repeat from * to * 8 times. The last 4 sts on the needle are knitted p.

Row 2: K4, p2, k2, p2, *k6, p2, k2, p2*. Repeat from * to * until you have 4 sts left. The remaining 4 sts are knitted k.

Row 3: P3, SR, p2, SL, *p4, BR, p2,

SL*. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 4: K3, p2, *k4, p2*. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left. They are knitted k.

Row 5: *P2, SR, p,4 SL*. Repeat from

* to * until you have 2 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 6: K2, p2, k6, *p2, k2, p2, k6 *. Repeat from * to * until you have 4 sts left.

They are knitted p2 and k2.

Row 7: P1, *SR, p6, SL*. Repeat from * to * until you have 1 st left, knitted p.

Row 8: K1, p2, k8, *p4, k8*. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts. They are knitted p2, k1.

Row 9: P1, k2, p8, *place 2 sts on cn behind the work, knit 2 sts k and then the 2 sts from the cn k, p8*. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left.

They are knitted k2, p1.

Row 10: As row 8.

Row 11: P1, *SL, p6, SR*. Repeat from * to * until you have 1 st left, knitted p.

Row 12: As row 6.

Row 13: *P2, SL, p4, SR*. Repeat from * to * until you have 2 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 14: As row 4.

Row 15: P3, SL, p2, SR, *p4, SL, p2, SR*. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 16: As row 2.

Row 17: P4, SL, SR, *p6, SL, SR*.

Repeat from * to * until you have 4 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 18: K5, p4, *k8, p4*. Repeat from * to * until you have 5 sts left. They are knitted k.

Row 19: P5, place 2 sts on a cn behind the work, knit 2 sts k and then the 2 sts from the cn k, *p8, place 2 sts on a cn behind the work, knit 2 sts k and then the 2 sts k*. Repeat from * to * until you have 5 sts left. They are knitted p.

Row 20: Repeat row 18.

Repeat these 20 rows 3 times and then the next 9 rows.

The 9 steeples are made individually:

Row 10 (W.S): K1, p2, k8, p2, k1. (14 sts on the needle).

Row 11 (R.S): P1, SL, p6, SR, p1 (14 sts on the needle.)

Row 12: K2tog, p2, k6, p2, k2. (You should have 13 sts on the needle.)

Row 13: P2tog as follows - sl1 purlwise, P1, psso, SL, p4, BS, p1. (You should have 12 sts on the needle.)

Row 14: K2tog, p2, k4, p2, k2. (You should have 11 sts on the needle.)

Row 15: P2tog, SL, p2, SR, p1. (You should have 10 sts on the needle.)

Row 16: K2tog, p2, k2, p2, k2. (You should have 9 sts on the needle.)

Row 17: SL, SR, p1. (You should have 8 sts on the needle.)

Row 18: K2tog, p4, k2. (You should have 7 sts on the needle.)

Row 19: P2tog. Place 1 st on a cn in front of the work, knit 1 st on the left needle p. Then knit the st from the cn k. Place 1 st on a cn behind the work, knit 1 st on the left needle k before you knit st from cn p. (You should have 6 sts on the needle.)

Row 20: Ktog2, p2, k2. (You should have 6 sts on the needle.)

Row 21: P2tog, k2, p2. (You should have 5 sts on the needle.)

Row 22: Ktog2, p2, k1. (You should have 4 sts on the needle.)

Row 23: Cast (bind) off.

Assembly:

Sew in all loose ends. Fold in 14cm (512in) of the wool fabric at the bottom and 10cm (4in) at the top, place the knitted front and back pieces right sides together and secure with pins. Sew around at the edge of the work, leaving an opening at the bottom. Sew by hand or with a machine.

Cut off excess fabric between the steeples and reverse the work. Fill the steeples with carded wool so they stand up.
