Upcycled jacket pillow

Finished size: 40 × 60cm (16 × 24in)

Use a sharp knife to open out the seams of an old jacket to obtain flat pieces. See if it will be possible to preserve and reuse any interesting details, such as pockets and buttons. Use a tape measure and an angled ruler and consider how to make the most of the different parts. Mark with a pencil before cutting.

For this grey pillow I used the largest sections from the top of the jacket. The back piece is made from the back of the jacket. The buttoning from the front of the jacket is used as the front piece of the pillow. This avoids finding another way of closing the pillow.

Place fur sides together, keeping in place with pins if necessary. Use a sharp sewing needle or alternatively a small leather needle and buttonhole thread. Attach the thread and tack (baste) a little piece inside the edge. If you use a leather needle you will have to be careful not to cut the leather.

Here we used masking tape to help to get the seams straight, about 1cm (38in) from the edge.
