250g (9oz) white no. 296

50g (134oz) blue no. 277

50g (134oz) red no. 256

312mm (size 4) circular needle

3mm (size 3) crochet hook

Finished size: 45 × 45cm (18 × 18in)

Working in the round:

CO 180 sts on a circular needle. Knit k until it measures approximately 40cm (16in)and the pillow is almost square.

Crochet star:

Use blue yarn.

Round 1: Crochet 4 ch, make a ring with 1 sl st in first ch, 1 ch.

Round 2: Crochet 6 sc in the ring, finish with 1 sl st in first sc, 1 ch.

Round 3: 2 sc in each sc = 12 sc, finish with 1 sl st in first sc, 1 ch.

Round 4: *1 sc, 1 ch (= small star loop),

1 sc in next st, 4 ch, 1 sc in the fourth ch from the needle, 1 ch*, repeat from * to * (= 6 small star loops) finish with 1 sl st in first sc.

Cut off the thread and pull through.

Crochet 17 stars in total.

 

Striped edge:

CO 6 sts with red yarn. Knit to end. When you have finished the first row, tighten the thread on the backside of the work and knit a new row k without turning the work. Switch to white yarn and do the same thing: Knit to end, tighten the thread on the backside of the work and start the next row from the right.

Continue with 2 red and 2 white rows until the string measures approximately 160cm (63in).

 

Assembly:

Sew in all loose ends. Press (iron) the pieces carefully. Sew the 17 blue stars onto the white piece in 5 rows (3 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 3).

Add the zip as described in Good Advice and sew together.

Sew the red and white string in a circle using kitchener stitch. Run the string around the pillow, pin and sew in place.
