Blue front piece:

CO 110 sts with blue yarn. Knit k back and forth for 10 rows until you have 5 rows of garter stitch. Continue using garter stitches on the 5 outermost sts on each side of the work.

Stockinette stitch the middle 100 sts like this:

Until the work measures 49.5cm (1912in). Knit 2 rows k making 1 garter row, knit the first 5 sts k and place on a safety pin. Cast (bind) off the next 100 by knitting 2 sts, slip the first st over the second, knit another st k, slip the first st over etc. until you have 5 sts left off the needle.

Cast (bind) off the last st like this:

Knit k2tog and k3 turn, knit k4 back turn, knit k2tog and k2, knit k3 back turn, knit k2tog and k1 turn, knit k2 back turn, knit ktog1 and finish.

White front piece:

CO 3 sts with white yarn and knit the first row k.

Row 2: Knit k1, increase 1 by knitting 2 sts k in next st and knit the remaining 2 sts k.

Row 3: Knit k1, increase 1 by knitting 2 sts k in next st and knit the remaining 3 sts k. Continue increasing 1 st in the beginning of each row until you have 17 sts on the needle. Knit k1, increase 1 by knitting 2 sts k in next st, knit k4, cast (bind) off the next 4 for buttonhole by knitting k2, slip the back st over the next etc. and finish with k6. You should now have 7 sts on each side of the buttonhole.

Knit the next row k1, increase 1 by knitting 2 sts k in next st, k5, CO 4 sts, and knit the last 7 sts k. Continue increasing 1 st in the beginning of each row until you have 103 sts on the needle. Switch to blue yarn, and continue in the same way until you have 110 sts. Then, continue until you have 5 blue rows of garter stitch. Cast (bind) off.

Embroider a blue stripe along the white edge. Chain stitch in the sts that were increased on each row.

Sew buttonhole stitches around the buttonhole (see Good Advice).

Assembly:

Press (iron) the three parts carefully. Place the white front piece against the top edge of the blue back piece, wrong sides together. Sew together with blue yarn inside the garter rows.

Then place the blue front piece against the blue back piece, right sides together and edge-to-edge at the bottom. (The white top is folded over.) Sew the two pieces together with blue yarn inside the garter edge. Sew together the blue corners on the two front pieces, then make a seam of approximately 12cm (412in) in each side under the white fold, so that the opening is about 30cm (12in).

Finish by adding a gold button with an anchor or alternatively a blue button.
