Red rose pillow

Materials

Red wool fabric for the back piece, approximately 42 × 42cm (1612 × 1612in)

Yarn

Sterk from Du Store Alpakka

(alpaca/merino wool/nylon)

200g (7oz) red no. 094

3.5mm (size 4) crochet hooks

Finished work: 40cm (16in) in diameter

Base:

Crochet 5 ch and make a ring with 1 sl st. Crochet two ch and continue with dc around the ring, total 12.

Place a stitch holder that marks where the row begins and ends.

Continue by crocheting dc in a thread from the backside of the work, so that the sts from the last row are on the front side of the work as a continuous line of sl st. Continue in the same direction the whole time.

Row 2: Crochet 1 sc, then 1 dc.

Continue with 2 dc in each st, so that you get 24 sts in total.

Row 3: Crochet *2 dc in the first st and

1 dc in the next st*.

Repeat until the end of the row.

Move the stitch holder as you move outwards.

Row 4: Continue with *1 dc into next 2 sts, then 2 dc in the next st*.

Repeat until the end of the row.

In every new row, increase the amount of dc that you crochet individually with 1 dc.

Row 5: *1 dc into next 3 sts,

then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 6: *1 dc into next 4 sts,

then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 7: *1 dc into next 5 sts,

then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 8: *1 dc into next 6 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 9: *1 dc into next 7 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 10:*1 dc into next 8 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 11: *1 dc into next 9 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 12: *1 dc into next 10 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 13: *1 dc into next 11 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 14:*1 dc into next 13 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 15: *1 dc into next 15 sts, then 2 dc in next st *

Row 16: *1 dc into next 17 sts, then 2 dc in next st *.

Row 17: *1 dc into next 19 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 18: *1 dc into next 25 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 19: *1 dc into next 30 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Row 20: *1 dc into next 35 sts, then 2 dc in next st*.

Continue this way until it measures 42cm (1612in) in diameter.

Rose spiral:

Secure the thread in the centre of the circle and crochet 1 sc in the first st on the front side of the work. Continue with 2 dc in each st until you have crocheted 9 rows.

Crochet 1 dc in the first st and 2 in the next 3 rows, before you go back to 2 dc in each st for 1 row. Repeat these 4 rows before you crochet 2 dc in each st until you are one row from the edge. End with 1 sc.

Assembly:

Alternatively you could crochet the back piece the same way that you made the base (you would need 100g (312oz) extra yarn).

Here we have used red wool fabric. Cut out a circle with a 42cm (1612in) diameter. Use a sewing machine to overstitch around the fabric.

Sew in all loose ends.

Place front and back pieces right sides together and sew around by hand or on the machine. Leave an opening of about 20cm (8in). Reverse the work and fill with a round pillow. If necessary, cut out a small red circle that is placed between the pillow and the crochet so that the pillow is not visible through the crochet. Stitch up the opening using small stitches.

In this work we started by making a base and then the rose petals – if we can call them that – are crocheted to the base as an eternity spiral.
