6mm (size 10) needles
Minimum 80cm (32in) long
Yarn
PT3 from Rauma Ullvarefabrikk (wool)
700g (1lb 9oz) red no. 7018
850g (1 lb 14oz) pink no. 7054
If you want to make the blanket bigger and use it e.g. as a bedspread, you need to allow more yarn. 50g (13⁄4oz) red is enough for about 12cm (43⁄4in). 50g (13⁄4oz) pink is enough for about 11cm (41⁄2in).
CO 240 sts of red yarn. Knit moss stitch (k1, p1 first row, opposite back) for 5cm (2in). Continue with moss stitch on the sides and cables in pink and red.
NB:There are two things you will need to remember when working this design:
a) It is important that you don’t tighten the thread too much on the back. If you do, the blanket will be very dense and narrow. Place a finger or two underneath the thread when you start a new colour.
b) The second challenge begins in the second row when you have to start the first cable. To get a nice and even edge between the pink moss stitch and the first red cable, you have to twist the red and pink yarn around one another before you continue knitting. You must do this on every row no matter if you knit k or p.
Cable Pattern:
Row 1: 8 sts moss stitch in pink, *k8 and p1
in red, k8 and p1 in pink*. Repeat from * to *
12 times. K8 in red, finish with 8 sts in moss stitch.
Row 2: 8 sts moss stitch in pink, p8 in red,
*k1 and p8 in pink, k1 and p8 in red*. Repeat from * to * 12 times. Finish with 8 sts moss stitch.
Repeat these 2 rows 5 more times.
Row 13: 8 sts moss stitch in pink. *Place the first 4 sts in red on a cn behind the work, knit k4 before you knit the 4 on the cn k and p1 in red. Switch to pink yarn. Place 4 sts on a cn, knit k4 before you knit the 4 sts on the cn k and p1. Repeat from * to * 12 times. Switch back to red yarn. Place 4 sts on a cn, knit k4 before you knit the 4 sts on the cn k. Finish with 8 sts moss stitch.
Row 13: Repeat Row 2.
Continue by repeating the pattern but from now on rows 1 and 2 should only be repeated 5 times before you twist the cables. When the blanket measures approximately 1.65m (13⁄4yds), finish with 5cm (2in) of pink moss stitch before you cast (bind) off.
