Red wool or cotton fabric

150g (5oz) red no. 4018

50g (134oz) pink no. 4516

3.5mm (size 4) needles

CO 3 sts of red yarn and work 1 row knit.

Continue knitting k while you increase by 1 st on each side of the central stitch every third row. Repeat until you have 111 sts on the needle. Knit 57 sts. Cast (bind) off the central sts by passing the 56th st over the 57th. Continue until the end of the needle. Leave the sts on the right side of the work on the needle while you continue with the left side of the work.

*Start by knitting the first 2 sts to 1, knit to the end of the needle. Repeat back. Knit back and forth without decreasing*. Repeat from * to * 6 times.

Knit the first 2 st to 1, knit to the end of the needle. Repeat back.

*Cast (bind) off the first 5 sts, knit to the end of the needle. Repeat back*. Repeat 4 times.

Cast (bind) off the last 8 st. Knit the right side of the work in the same way.

Cable edge:

CO 16 sts with pink yarn.

Row 1: Knit k2, p12, k2. (This is on the backside.)

Row 2: Knit p2, k12, p2.

Repeat Rows 1 and 3 three times in total.

Row 7: Knit p2, place the next 3 sts on a cn behind the work, knit k3, knit the 3 from the cn k. Place the next 3 on a cn in front of the work, knit k3, knit the 3 from the cn k, p2.

Repeat rows 1–7 until the edge reaches around half of the heart, and cast (bind) off. Knit two identical cable edges.

Assembly:

Sew in all the loose ends. Fold the wool fabric in half with the backside facing up. Place the heart on the fabric and sketch around. Cut out with a 1cm (38in) seam allowance.

Place the heart and the two layers of fabric on top of each other and sew together so that the right side is out. Leave approximately 10cm (4in) on one side. Stuff carded wool between the two fabric layers or use a heart-shaped pillow. Stitch up.

Hide the edges with the knitted cable that you sew onto the work with small stitches – first on the front side and then on the back.
