Notes on the Authors

Michael Francis C. Andrada teaches with the Department of Filipino and Filipino Literature of the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He is a member of the Congress of Teachers and Educators for Nationalism and Democracy and the All-UP Academic Union.

Romulo S. Baquiran, Jr. teaches with the Department of Filipino and Filipino Literature of the University of the Philippines-Diliman. An award-winning poet and critic, he is currently the Deputy Director of the UP Likhaan: Institute of Creative Writing.

Poet, critic and award-winning essayist, Ronald Baytan is an Associate Professor of Literature at the De La Salle University. His first book of poems, The Queen Sings the Blues, is a forthcoming title from Anvil.

Christopher E. Cahilig received his undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Santo Tomas. He is currently a corporate writer and freelances as a public relations consultant.

Ernesto Villaluz Carandang II teaches with the Department of Filipino at the De La Salle University. His first book of short stories, Angkan ni Eba, was published by the University of Santo Tomas Press in 2005.

Ian Rosales Casocot hails from Dumaguete City where he is currently teaching literature at the Silliman University. Author of prize-winning stories, his first book was included in the UBOD New Writers Series published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2003.

Mark Anthony Cayanan recently finished his MA in Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines. He has attended several writers’ workshops, and is currently a faculty member of the English Department at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Carlomar Arcangel Daoana serves as a junior associate for poetry for the UST Creative Writing Center, where he has paneled for its workshop and edited its literary journal, Tomas. His second book of poems will be out next year, six years after Marginal Bliss, published by the UP Press.

Honorio Bartolome de Dios has won prizes for his fiction in Filipino at the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. He divides his time between teaching at the Filipino Department of the Ateneo de Manila University and doing graduate studies at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

M. Protacio de Guzman used to write for ABS-CBN. He now works with an international NGO in Cambodia. He also writes short stories for children and helps out in The Library Foundation.

Nestor de Guzman’s first book of poems, Galing Cine Café, was published by Lambana Press in 2005. He is also the editor of the anthology, Si Nora Aunor Sa Mga Noranian: Mga Paggunita at Pagtatapat, published by Milflores Publishing, Inc., in 2006.

Paul G. del Rosario hails from San Pablo City, Laguna, where he is often asked to judge in gay beauty pageants. He is an alumnus of the national writers workshops of the University of the Philippines and the Pambansang Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas.

Gary C. Devilles teaches with the Filipino Department of the Ateneo de Manila University, where he is also completing his graduate studies. Among his many causes are teacher education and student empowerment.

Jaime Dasca Doble’s first book of poems, Order of the Poets, came out in 2006. In the same year, he also edited Kadiliman: the Philippine Collegian Anthology of Critical and Creative Writing. He divides his time between Manila and his hometown, Botolan, Zambales.

Andrew Drilon writes fiction and illustrates for graphic novels while taking his Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Eugene Y. Evasco is a multi-awarded poet, essayist and author of books for children. He recently completed his Ph.D. in Filipino Literature, and teaches with the Department of Filipino of the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Ralph Semino Galan’s chapbook of poems, The Southern Cross, was part of the UBOD New Writers Series published in 2003 by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. He is currently teaching literature and humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas.

Felino S. Garcia, Jr.’s last academic post was at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños. He currently works as a Customer Service Representative at the Panasonic Company in Ayala Avenue, Makati City, and he has won the Palanca Awards for Literature.

Raymund M. Garlitos is an award-winning poet and author of children’s books. He was a fellow in several national writers workshops, including the Iligan National Writers Workshop, and the national writers workshop sponsored by the University of the Philippines (Tacloban Campus).

Alex Gregorio finished his undergraduate degree in creative writing at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. His first book of poems, The Rose Gun, was published by High Chair in 2004. He has recently returned from his work on environmental education in Budapest, Hungary.

Jose Claudio B. Guerrero teaches with the Department of English and Comparative Literature of the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He is also the head for marketing of the UP Press.

J. P. Jacobo graduated with an AB and an MA in Filipino Literature from the Ateneo de Manila University, where he teaches. A recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, he is currently pursuing his PhD in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Alwynn C. Javier was born and raised in Roxas, Isabela. He studied Business Administration and Accountancy at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, where he learned writing tula-dula with the UP Repertory Company. He has an AB Development Studies at the Ateneo de Manila, where he started writing poems with Heights.

R. Zamora Linmark is a prolific Filipino-American poet and fiction writer. His acclaimed first novel, Rolling the R’s, was published in New York by Kaya Books in 1995. He finished his graduate studies in Creative Writing at the University of Hawaii in Manoa and has received several grants, including two Fulbrights.

Ino Manalo graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English at the Ateneo de Manila, where he received prizes for his writing. He is one of country’s foremost cultural historians and heritage conservationists. An award-winning essayist and fictionist, he recently served as director of the Manila Metropolitan Museum.

Arvin Abejo Mangohig’s first book of poems, The Gaze, was published by the University of the Philippines Press. He is currently the President of the UP Writers Club, and serves as the webmaster of panitikan.com.ph.

Roel Hoang Manipon received his undergraduate degree in Journalism from the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas. He writes for the Daily Tribune.

Francis L. Martinez finished his MA in Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. A former teacher of Literature and Creative Writing in UP, he is currently working as an English language trainer in one of the biggest call centers in Metro Manila.

Xerxes Matza finished his undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts at the De La Salle University. He is currently based in Sydney, where he continues to receive awards and recognition for his short gay fiction.

Nicolas Pichay is a lawyer and well-known playwright and poet. His book of award-winning plays, Psychedelia Apocalysis, is a recent title from the University of the Philippines Press. He has won awards from the CCP, the Palanca, and the Centennial Literary Awards.

Rommel B. Rodriguez teaches at the Department of Filipino and Filipino Literature at UP-Diliman. In 2003, he coedited, with Roselle V. Pineda and Eugene Y Evasco, an anthology of gay and lesbian critical essays in Filipino, Tabi-tabi sa Pagsasantabi: Kritikal na mga Tala ng mga Lesbiana at Bakla sa Sining, Kultura, at Wika.

Louie Jon A. Sanchez is a poet and features writer who just completed his graduate studies in Creative Writing at the De La Salle University.

J. Dennis Teodosio has won prizes for his short stories. His screenplays have also received recognition from the Cine Manila International Film Festival, the Film Development Foundation of the Philippines, and the Film Academy of the Philippines.

Rolando B. Tolentino is an associate for fiction of the Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing. The founding chair of Katha, he is currently teaching at the UP Film Institute, and is a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and the Congress of Teachers and Educators for Nationalism and Democracy.

Gerardo Z. Torres’s first book of short fiction, Pink Men in Love, was published by the University of Santo Tomas Press in 2005. He is currently teaching with the Literature Department of the De La Salle University.

Charlie Samuya Veric, poet, critic and translator, is currently completing his graduate studies at Yale University. He took an MA in Literary and Cultural Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Camilo M. Villanueva, Jr. completed his undergraduate studies at the De La Salle University. He does freelance writing and editing.

Niccolo Vitug finished his Fine Arts degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. He earned his MFA in Creative Writing at Silliman University in Dumaguete City. He is currently teaching English to. foreign students.

Ernesto Superal Yee is currently Clerk of Court V at the Regional Trial Court, Branch 32 of Dumaguete City. He is also a part-time Professor of Civil and Remedial Law at the Silliman University, and is the author of several books of poetry and fiction.

Cebuano Lawrence Lacambra Ypil has won the first prize for poetry in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. He teaches Poetry and Creative Writing at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he is finishing his MA in Literary and Cultural Studies.
