Yesterday’s Virginian-Pilot lay on top of Spence’s reading stack. He quickly found the article marked on the left side of page three. The picture showed the mayors of both Virginia Beach and Hampton shaking hands and flanked by Paul McGovern and Jack Lang. Spence was delighted. He’d asked Jack to set up some modest press coverage of Double Eagle’s pledge of $5,000,000.00 to assist the families of the tunnel disaster that had deeply affected both communities.

The story described Double Eagle Industries as a European-based company specializing in worldwide supply chain management and security solutions. The two Mayors had presented keys to their respective cities and thanked the company for their generosity. Both were surprised by the pair’s lack of interest in holding a prime time press conference. That was generally the quid pro quo for donations a fraction of this amount. However, Paul and Jack stipulated that the occasion be marked only by a small office ceremony and but were finally persuaded and agreed to the release of a photograph and story to the press as a means of stimulating other donations. A local Virginia bank with branches on both sides of Hampton Roads would administer the funds, and their website and telephone number were provided for others wishing to contribute to the fund. Jack handled the assignment perfectly.
