The small window in Spence’s paging device lit up. Spence lifted the small machine and smiled. He spoke several words aloud to himself in his native tongue that conveyed something positive, some good news. The fact that Spence had an inside man at DHS on the Special Task Force was important. Jack had kept Spence apprised of the team’s efforts and had pin-pointed some specific areas that Spence had the opportunity to “clean” in advance, thwarting any collection of data and avoiding any connection with Double Eagle. But that really wasn’t enough. Spence wanted to know what Steele and his close-mouthed assistant were planning next and how he might outflank their efforts.
Spence expected that the loss of Meg Andrews would have a negative impact, but the objective was to learn enough to take down the Task Force as well. Momentary set-backs could be overcome. Spence was annoyed with his team’s recent failures and couldn’t understand why these “easy” domestic operations were proving so difficult. He made a mental note to talk to Paul and ask him to formally look into the lapses. Meantime, he needed to follow-through on an important VIP event. The Double Eagle organization needed to begin planning. This had to be a zero defect operation.
