One of the most successful French fighter planes of WWI, the nimble Nieuport Nie 17 was produced by the Société Anonyme des Etablissements Nieuport. The first planes were equipped with an over-the-wing Lewis machine gun, but the later models had a synchronized through-the-propeller Vickers .303 machine gun.
