yellowstone and grand teton national parks
The proximity of these national parks offers a great opportunity to see two impressive parks in one trip. Although Yellowstone is more popular, many travelers swear the Grand Tetons is a more spectacular experience. Make time to visit both.
Highlights
Watch Old Faithful erupt 130 feet (40m) into the air from Observation Point.
Hike to Artist Point for a stunning view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Climb Signal Mountain Summit Road, and behold Teton Range and Jackson Hole Valley.
BEST TIME TO GO
June and September are ideal months for a visit due to the typically mild weather and light crowds, but weather is always a wild card so be prepared no matter when you visit.
CAMPGROUNDS
Colter Bay Village RV Park
100 Colter Bay Village Road, Moran, WY 83013. gtlc.com; reservations@gtlc.com; 307-543-2811. May 22 to September 20. $58 to $68. Showers, bathrooms, laundry.
Colter Bay is situated inside Grand Teton National Park, and its location can’t be beat. This full-hookup campground is clean and entirely no frills, but who drives to Wyoming for pools and playgrounds? You’ll wake up in the comfort of your own RV, surrounded by a magical landscape. For astonishing views of the mountains, take the 5-minute walk to Jackson Lake. Love kayaking? Many outfitters can get you set up.
Book early; sites fill up fast.
Fishing Bridge RV Park
Fishing Bridge RV Park, Yellowstone National Park. nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/fishingbridgecg.htm; 307-344-7311. May 8 to September 20. $46.75. General store, gas station.
This is the only campground located inside Yellowstone National Park that offers full hookups. Much like Colter Bay in Grand Teton, it’s run by a concessionaire with spartan amenities and is all about the location. You’ll be close to West Thumb, Hayden Valley, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
RVs up to 40 feet (12m) long can be accommodated. Only hard-sided rigs are allowed—no tents and no pop-ups—because the park is located in bear country. Campfires aren’t allowed for the same reason. Educate yourself about bear safety after booking your site—and plan on reserving well in advance.
A park ranger hosts evening programs at the amphitheater, and a general store and gas station are nearby.

There are more than 300 geysers in Yellowstone, but the most popular is Old Faithful, which erupts approximately every 91 minutes.
Yellowstone Park/West Entrance KOA

This KOA is only 5 minutes from Yellowstone’s West Entrance and a short drive to Old Faithful and other park attractions. The campground is bustling and crowded in the summer, and sites near the highway are noisy. But the amenities are great, and the surroundings are beautiful.
Grab some pancakes and coffee from the Koffee Kabin before heading into the park. After a long day, relax in the indoor pool and hot tub. Mini-golf and bike rentals also are available. Barbecue is offered each evening if you don’t feel like driving to dinner. Be sure to try the homemade fudge.
