One Woman’s Journey from Gay to Straight
Cancer is a playground bully. You know, the kid who pulls the wings off flies? There you are, yukking it up with your friends, swinging too high, getting dizzy on the merry-go-round. Then cancer comes out of nowhere, grabs you by the hair, tosses you off the monkey bars and shoves you to the ground. It forces you to see the earth up close and then rolls you over to blind you with the sun.
YOU COUNTERFEIT PUNK. THINK YOU’RE IMMORTAL? WHAT’S THAT IN YOUR TITS? YEAH YOU FELT ME RIGHT. THAT LUMP? THAT’S ME. NOW TRY FLYING WITHOUT WINGS.
I fought back best a person can with a bilateral mastectomy and lymph node dissection. Then with daily pills and monthly capsules shot into my belly with a needle the width of a swizzle stick that tricked my pituitary, shut down my ovaries, and stole my mojo so I could no more rise from the back of the band bus than a woman without a backbone.
Instead of adorning myself in pink ribbons, gathering donations and hobbling around a track with hundreds of other survivors, I plotted a different route. When I rose from the back of that bus centuries later, I quit the band and signed up for Sojourn Reclaimers.

Yeah, that’s some god you got there, Patrice. Intelligent design made cancer? Please. Liesl, we are here for you. All you have to do is ask. All you have to do is forgive.

My thoughts and prayers are with you today.
RugbyLVR:
Ah, yes. Thoughts and prayers. If only it were so simple. Liesl, please tell us you are doing better.
