* Such was the fog of war that Capt. Jolliffe had never heard of the manner of 2nd Lieut Arthur’s death when asked about it in 1970. Arthur’s story was built up by assembling fragments from many sources.

Four of the squadrons in action during the day were from No. 9 Wing, R.F.C. The officer commanding the wing was Lieut-Col. Hugh Dowding, later Air Chief Marshal Dowding, who led Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain.
