ANE(E)Q: Association nationale des étudiants (et étudiantes) du Québec, Québec’s main national student association for most of its existence from 1976 to 1994. It became the ANEEQ in 1987.
ASSÉ: Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante, one of Québec’s three national student associations, which encompasses local associations at both the CEGEP (college) and university level. Founded in 2001.
Assemblée nationale: Québec’s provincial legislature located in Québec City.
CEGEP: Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel, Québec’s publicly-funded colleges. In Québec, high school runs until Grade 11, followed by either a two-year pre-university program (leading toward a three-year university degree) or a three-year vocational program. Both options are largely free.
CLASSE: Coalition large de l’Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante, the ASSÉ’s expanded coalition, which existed from December 2011 to November 2012 to broaden and coordinate the strike.
CREPUQ: Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec, a private organization and lobby group founded in 1963 that united the administration heads of virtually all of Québec’s universities. It was refounded as the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire in 2014.
FAECQ: Fédération des associations étudiantes du Québec, the precursor to the Fédération étudiante collégiale du Québec (FECQ), which existed from 1982 to 1987 and encompassed local associations at the CEGEP (college) level.
FECQ: Fédération étudiante collégiale du Québec, one of Québec’s three national student associations, which encompasses only associations at the CEGEP (college) level. Founded in 1990.
FEEQ: Fédération des étudiants et étudiantes du Québec, the initial name chosen for the Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec, founded in 1989. It was renamed FEUQ one year later.
FEUQ: Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec, Québec’s largest national student association, which encompasses only local associations at the university level. Founded in 1989 as the Fédération des étudiants et étudiantes du Québec (FEEQ), renamed one year later.
MELS: Ministère de l’éducation, du sport et du loisir, Québec’s education ministry (responsible also for sports and leisure).
MNA: Member of the National Assembly (or Assemblée nationale), Québec’s provincial legislature.
RAEU: Regroupement des associations étudiantes universitaires, the precursor to the FEUQ. It existed first as a working group within the ANEEQ from 1976 and then as an independent national association from 1981 to 1986.
SPVM: Service de police de la ville de Montréal, Montréal’s police force.
SQ: Sûreté du Québec, Québec’s provincial police force.
UGEQ: Union générale des étudiants du Québec, Québec’s first national student association, which existed from 1963 to 1969.
