Chapter 21.

The Cat didn’t like the hasty way the man Josh grabbed him from the shelf and carried him out to the green car. But he was glad to be away from all the shouting and snarling. Praise the Great Cat, for providing the office with a high perch! Stretched out on the back shelf, he groomed his puffed black tail.

One thing the Cat didn’t understand: Where was the brown dog? Along with all the confusion in the office, the Cat had thought that one thing was settled, at least: Tucker was finally matched with the right patron. When Josh returned to the office after removing the killer dog, the brown dog turned to him with pleading eyes. Josh picked up his leash and nodded toward the door, and Tucker trotted off with him, pressing his shoulder against Josh’s leg.

But to the Cat’s surprise, when Josh dumped him in the green car a few moments later, Tucker was not in it. Instead, Tucker was staring at them from the long gray car. As Josh drove away from the kennel, Tucker barked What about me? barks through the window.

Josh also seemed discontented, his shoulders hunched over the steering wheel. Even with his deficient human ears, he must have heard the dog, but he did not turn back.

Never mind; the Cat had other things to think about. Spitting out a wad of loose tail hairs, he twisted to groom the fur on his spine.
