Sally Ride

  1. Sally Ride was born May 26, 1951, in California and attended Stanford University, where she studied physics.
  2. In 1977, NASA began looking for female astronauts. Sally Ride was one of six women chosen for the job.
  3. In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space as an astronaut on a shuttle mission. Her job was to work the robotic arm to help put satellites into space.
  4. After leaving NASA, Sally Ride became a teacher. She came up with the idea for NASA’s EarthKAM project, which lets students take pictures of Earth using a camera on the International Space Station.
  5. In 2003, Sally Ride was added to the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
