Edmund Crispin had published six full-length novels by the time he was persuaded to contribute a short story to Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, which appeared in June 1949. Significantly longer than any of his subsequent short stories, it was also his first published work not to feature the irrepressible Gervase Fen.
