After nine novels and forty-five short stories, Edmund Crispin’s literary legacy was thought to be complete. But we end this collection with a final treat: a full-length Christmas novella from 1948 featuring Gervase Fen, which remained unpublished until Tony Medawar discovered it among Crispin’s papers in 2019 in the hunt for uncollected stories for his Bodies from the Library anthology series. It is a joy to be reacquainted with Gervase Fen, and The Hours of Darkness is perhaps the perfect swan song to the collected works of Edmund Crispin.
