Afterword
I hope you have enjoyed discovering all the fascinating details of felines and their magickal lives, as I did when compiling this book. The domestic cat is a marvelous creature, full of love and healing and its own kind of magick. Whatever its breed—from the non-pedigreed to those with lengthy papers—the cat has proved itself to be a wonderful, loving companion, a psychiatrist on duty at all hours, a solicitous friend and healer.
We can never presume to know why certain cats come into our lives, especially if we believe in the powers of the goddess Bast.
Just before I started writing this book, we were chosen by little Valkyrie and Beowulf, but lost Finnigan to illness. We thought that the new cats, who joined Callisto, were to be the end of additions to our family for some time. We were wrong. When we discovered that three tiny kittens were to be disposed of, we couldn’t say no. These feisty little fur balls (whose mother was a purebred Siamese seal point) are Hocus Pocus (Pokey), Hexi, and Shadow. Cats are delightful creatures, intelligent and unique in their approach to life and living with humans. Perhaps if more humans thought we could learn something useful from cats, the human condition might improve. I leave you with the insightful words of Fernand Mery:
With the qualities of cleanliness, discretion, affection, patience, dignity, and courage that cats have, how many of us would be capable of being cats?
