The Wonderful world of transfers is an area I am just beginning to explore, and, of course, I have to transfer onto a tile! This technique really does open the creative floodgates when you think about the limitless possibilities for combining tiles with images. It is also a way to add another level of interest on tile surfaces to use in your mixed-media mosaics. The process that I demonstrate in this project uses the simplest of transfer methods, but hey, it works!
1 TRIM IMAGE
Pick an image to transfer and tear the edges of it to soften it a bit.
2 MEASURE CLAY
Condition and roll out some white Sculpey clay to about ." (10mm) thickness. Stamp with something having a straight edge at one end of the clay. Trim the clay down to a rectangle so that the stamped texture is at the top and there is enough smooth clay at the bottom to accommodate the image.
3 RUB ON GEL MEDIUM
Insert an eye pin at the top of the piece and bake as directed. When the tile has cooled, you can prepare to do your transfer. Begin by rubbing gel medium onto the front of the image.
4 BURNISH IMAGE
Place the image facedown onto the tile where you want it, and press it lightly. Then burnish the image to the tile, using a craft or stir stick.
5 RUB OFF PAPER
Rub the image with your finger in a circular motion, until all of the paper is worn off.
6 ADD WASH
Brush a wash of color around the image, on the plain portion of the tile. Brush a contrasting color on the top stamped portion.
7 ADD RUB ’N BUFF
Apply some Green Jade Rub ‘n Buff on all sides.
