CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE

SLOWLY RUSTING AWAY

Yarrow had hoped that all the publicity surrounding the arrest and committal to trial of Peter Grimshaw might jog a few memories, that somebody might remember something in connection with the accused man which could lead to an answer as to how he transported Emily to Bolehill Copse and the murder site, but nobody came forward.

Benedict Humphfreys might have done so. He had an allotment quite close to Wilf Grimshaw’s and where Peter kept the Excelsior and had seen Peter Grimshaw working on the bike before he took it out on the road. Benedict used to talk with Wilf Grimshaw as they swapped tales about the size of their marrows, but he only knew Peter by sight. However, there is no doubt he would have contacted the police about the Excelsior, unfortunately, he had a heart attack and died the day before Emily’s murder.

Did Peter Grimshaw take the Excelsior out that night and use it to carry Emily up to Bolehill Copse?

Was Alice Entwhistle right when she stated she thought she had heard a motorbike stopping by the copse that night?

It is doubtful whether this will ever be discovered. Peter Grimshaw steadfastly refused to reveal how he had taken Emily’s to that fateful copse. And so that old motorbike might still be chocked up in that allotment shed, slowly rusting away.
