Epilogue

New Year’s Eve

That was the most delicious meal ever,” Belle sighed as she lay back on the fur-edged blanket laid before the fire in their little cottage. They had gone back there after the Winsome ball and indulged in a glorious picnic before that night’s party at Louisa’s house. The party to celebrate their engagement. She felt so very warm and content, the heat from the fire dancing over her bare arms and the wine she had drunk flowing through her veins. How long had it been since she felt so very content, so very right.

Never, she realized as she reached for Will’s hand. She had never felt like this before, as if she was exactly where she was meant to be.

She rolled onto her side and propped her head on her arm to study him, her fiancé, as he lay stretched out beside her. He was the very picture of indolent, masculine grace, a golden jungle cat dozing in the sun, coiled strength at rest. He had shed his coat, cravat, and waistcoat, and his shirt fell open to reveal a deep vee of glistening, smoothly muscled skin and the strong column of his throat. In one hand he held a half-full wineglass while the other stroked the hem of her silk skirt.

A lazy smile touched his lips. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. That I can still surprise you.”

“I do like your surprises.” She reached out and gently traced her fingertips over the chiseled angles of his face. His sharp cheekbones, the rough bristles over his jaw, his closed eyes and the silken sweep of his brows. The fading bruise. He lay there, very still, eyes closed, and just let her explore.

Until she leaned down and lightly kissed his lips, and he suddenly caught her in his arms, making her squeal-laugh.

He put down his glass and wound his arm around her waist, lowering her down onto the blanket. His palms planted to either side of her as he held himself over her. His blue eyes were hooded and intent as he stared down at her.

“I’d just like to know something about one more surprise,” he said.

“And what would that be, my Galahad?”

“Who is Lady X at the Rose?”

Belle laughed and dragged him down with her. “That, my love, is one secret I shall never tell...”
