DISTANCE: 4 miles (6.4km) TIME: 2 hours START/END: NY121223 From a terraced layby to the northeast of the lake, between the road and the lake TERRAIN: Easy MAPS: |
Start the walk from the car park on the road above the lake. Alternatively there is another car park by the telephone box a little further along the road. Walk along the road above the lake in the direction of Loweswater village.
Leave the road to follow the path beside the lake.
If the water level in the lake is high you may have to return to the road.
When a fence blocks the way ahead, go back up to the road and turn right onto it, opposite a pinfold.
Continue on the road up the hill, and then turn right down a tarmac lane, signposted ‘Public Bridleway – Loweswater’.
After the curves in the road, turn right, through the National Trust car park, and walk along the track across the fields.
Viewpoint over the field to the lake.
At Watergate Farm, pass in front of the buildings, through the gate and along the lakeside path.
Tree spotters can note the wide variety of hardwoods grown here. As this is National Trust land there is freedom to wander and identify species or to linger on the shore.
Continue on the path alongside the wall and away from the lake.
At Hudson Place turn right and go down a ‘hollow lane’
There is a choice of paths here. Either continue straight on, or turn right to cut the corner by going through the gate, down and over a wooden bridge, and up to a gate at the roadside.
In either case, turn right onto the road and follow it back to the starting point.
