Park in the old quarry parking area at the foot of Tilberthwaite Gill, which is reached by a minor road off the A593 Coniston to Ambleside road. From Coniston it is the first turning to the north. From Ambleside it is the second turning on the right after passing the little roadside tarn (Yew Tree Tarn).
Continue up the road and cross the bridge. Turn sharp right, passing through a narrow gap in the wall and follow the left bank of the river to join a woodland path at a kissing gate.
At the path junction, bear right and continue on through the wood.
Turn right onto the minor road and walk along it down to and then alongside the river.
Turn left just before the bridge. Go up the path by the wall, round and through the gates.
Turn left at a wall corner up a track. Do not go right, which would take you down to the road. The track passes through a kissing gate after 80yds (75m) and becomes a rough path.
View over Yew Tree Tarn.
The path crosses a fence at a kissing gate. When you get to the big boulders, bear left to climb upwards.
View over Langdale Pikes.
Just after you go through the col (Uskdale Gap) and as the path starts to descend, go left and up to the big stone cairn which should be visible above. This marks the summit of Ivy Crag. The summit of Holme Fell itself, at 317m, is a ten minute walk to the south-west of Ivy Crag.
Rest by the cairn and enjoy the view which, by any standards is spectacular.
Do not be tempted into exploration. There are some dangerous crags to the south. Turn back and return to the path junction at . Turn left, going towards the small tarn.
Go left before the tarn, then bear left again to cross the dam of a second tarn. Just after this, bear left once more, passing below a small crag, and after 110yds (100m) bear right to descend to a wall.
At the wall turn left, through the gate and descend. Turn sharp right, down to the cottages and through the gate on to the road.
Walk left past the cottages along the road, and then turn right on the woodland path and retrace your steps to the starting point.
