The Bay Bank Building was the closest Springdale got to a skyscraper—a modern, glass-and-steel tower. A blue-chip address.
Pillette walked hurriedly up to the front door and entered the lobby. He had a carpenter’s folding rule sticking out of his right hip pocket. Through the glass front of the building, Harry saw Pillette press an elevator button and wait.
“The guy who was in Marian Turner’s apartment.” Harry said. “This time of night? What’s a carpenter doing in the Bay Bank Building?”
“Maybe,” Friday said, “carpentry.”
Through the window, Harry watched the elevator door open.
Pillette entered the elevator. The elevator door slid closed. Harry started into the Bay Bank Building.
“If you follow him,” Friday said, “I’m leaving.”
“Good thinking,” Harry said. “Don’t want you in harm’s way.”
Harry opened the Bay Bank Building door.
“I’ll meet you at the office,” Harry said without looking back at Friday.
