Here’s a slow-cooker take on the classic cocktail party food of the 1970s, which is still very popular today. Be sure to crack the lid on the slow cooker as directed so the bacon gets a bit crispy.
Makes 24.
24 large dates, pitted
12 slices thick-cut bacon, halved
Toothpicks
1. Wrap each date in a piece of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
2. Place the “devils” in the slow cooker. Their sides can touch. Cover and cook on High for 2 to 3 hours. During the last hour, prop the lid open with the handle of a wooden spoon. This allows the steam to escape and makes the snacks crispier. Serve hot.
Variation:
If you want an extra layer of flavor, consider drizzling the wraps with a tiny bit of honey—just enough for a drop or two per wrap. You can also sprinkle them lightly with cayenne or curry powder during the last hour of cooking when the lid is ajar for an extra zing.
