ACKNOWLEDGMENTSACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We would like to thank the many people who were kind enough to speak with us about their knowledge of the costume design industry: Colleen Atwood, Kym Barrett, Margo Baxley, Jacqueline Bisset, Mark Bridges, Seth Carriere, Clarissa Carriere Abbott, Helen Colvig, David Chierichetti, Tom Culver, Stephan Elliott, Joan Evans Weatherly, April Ferry, Lizzy Gardiner, Betsy Heimann, Anne Jeffreys, Gary Jones, Jerome Kay, Willa Kim, Kevin King, Monica Lewis, Ellen Mirojnick, Penny Rose, May Routh, Greg Schreiner, Marinka Sjoberg, Leonard Stanley, Jack Taggart, Mary Vogt, Andrea Weaver, Raquel Welch, and Albert Wolsky.
For many years, Hollywood’s precious history was discarded all too easily. Photographs and negatives, held together with silver and gelatin, rotted away because of improper storage. Costume sketches and wardrobe records were tossed in the waste bin as new studio regimes arrived. Costumes themselves met an inglorious fate most of the time when they were reworked for other productions until they finally wore out. We would like to thank a group of individuals whose expertise in their fields saved a great deal of Hollywood history. The late Robert Cushman, photograph curator for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library, and Manoah Bowman have rescued millions of negatives and film stills from obliteration. It is because of the dedication of photo preservationists like them that we are able to see film history in a new light. For their kindness in offering images and sketches from their private collections, we would like to thank Tom Culver, David Chierichetti, Jim Avey, Bill Sutton, Robert Evanko, Forest Paulette, Greg Schreiner, and Mark A. Vieira.
This book would not be possible without the aid of archivists who work to preserve Hollywood’s history. Jenny Romero, Special Collections Department Coordinator, and the staff of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library were always of great assistance. We are also very grateful for the help of Robert Daicopoulos and Robert Vaughn of the Louis B. Mayer Library at the American Film Institute. All quotes from Adele Balkan are from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences oral history with Barbara Hall.
Thank you to those who offered special assistance: Ali MacGraw, Dean Lamanna, Rob Saduski, Michael Childers and Laurie Baccaccio. Many friends and associates made themselves available for help in invaluable ways, including Gene Snook, Robert Mycroft, Michael Giammarese, Jeff Roberts, Mark Mayes, James Radford, Tim Jenkins, Lisa Malec, Tim Waller, and Marissa Vassari.
Putting a book together takes many talented people, and we were so lucky to have a fantastic group of people working with us. We are especially grateful to our editor, Cindy De La Hoz, at Running Press for her guidance and patience. Thank you to Chris Navratil and Allison Devlin, the publishers at Running Press, for their belief in this project. Thank you to Jennifer K. Beal Davis and Joshua McDonnell for their beautiful design and for bringing these pages to life. Mark A. Vieira also gave new life to the many historical images in the book. Thank you to Stacy Schuck, Susan K. Hom and Kendra Bean for helping to give us the best product possible and to Seta Zink for making sure people know about it. Thank you to Heather Margolis, John Malahy, Jennifer Dorian, Genevieve McGillicuddy, Shannon Clute, and Kristen Welch of Turner Classic Movies, and Aaron Spiegeland and John Parham of Parham-Santana.
