Charles’ disaffection with the motor car proved to be, sadly, well placed as he was to lose his life on the road whilst cycling. It is believed that Charles was killed by a driver of an unknown vehicle whilst returning from watching his sons perform at the Long Crendon School Sports Day. Charles was a governor at the school.

Details of his death were recorded in the Oxford Mail on the 26th May 1951, the day after the accident. A lorry driver found Charles lying in the road at around 4 p.m. Unfortunately, at the same time, his youngest son, Michael Pope passed the scene on the double decker school bus and realised it was his father who was receiving treatment at the roadside.

Charles’ untimely death had a huge impact upon his family and left his widow, Doris, to bring up their three children alone.
