The Alabama Orchestra started back in 1921 as a group of volunteer musicians, and it has since evolved into the state’s only full-time professional orchestra. Every summer the orchestra puts on a free concert series at Birmingham’s Railroad Park. This stunning nineteen-acre urban green space uniquely portrays railroad history while including some interesting modern design features. For the concerts, attendees can find a spot to settle in at the all-natural amphitheater, constructed from hand-cast bricks and recycled objects dating back to when the railroad was first constructed.

For adult groups, the Friday and Saturday night concerts are a perfect way to spend a summer evening listening to classical masterpieces, while the Sunday afternoon concerts are more family-oriented with selections from The Sound of Music and even some dance tunes such as “Twist and Shout.” Since bringing your own refreshments is encouraged, locals are sure to be nibbling on Southern classics like deviled eggs and pickled shrimp followed by a slice of Alabama Lane Cake. Folks are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs and even family pets all weekend long for some laid-back entertainment in “Birmingham’s Living Room.”
