The grated apple in these autumn-themed turkey burgers adds a hint of sweetness and keeps them moist. I prefer to use ground turkey that includes the white and dark meat for these burgers so they don’t dry out on the grill.
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
6 slices bacon
1 apple
1 pound ground turkey, white and dark meat
¼ cup sliced green onions
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon dry mustard
6 slices sharp Cheddar cheese
6 hamburger buns
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Mix together the maple syrup and Dijon mustard in a small bowl. Place a wire rack on top of a baking sheet. Coat each strip of bacon with the maple mixture on each side, and place on the wire rack. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp.
Grate the apple, and then squeeze out the excess juice. In a large bowl combine the turkey, grated apple, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, and dry mustard. Be careful not to over mix the ingredients. Form the turkey mixture into 6 patties, and refrigerate until you are ready to grill.
Heat the grill to medium-high heat. Place the burgers on the grill, and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Place the cheese on the burgers for the last minute of grilling. Break each strip of cooked bacon into halves, and place 2 half strips on each cooked burger. Place the burgers on the buns and serve warm.
