In preparing this little work I have had occasion to make frequent reference to an admirable memoir of Lord Lytton in “The Derby Ministry: a Series of Cabinet Pictures,” written by Mr. Charles Kent, one of his Lordship’s oldest and most intimate friends, and published, under the nom de plume of “Mark Rochester,” in the year 1858. That memoir, indeed, forms the basis of all subsequent biographies of his Lordship hitherto published. I have also derived much assistance from a review of Lord Lytton’s novels published anonymously in 1854.
The portrait of Lord Lytton on the cover appeared originally in the Graphic, and is reproduced by permission of the proprietors, of that Journal.
