Chapter 31

Blathers and I weren’t sure if any of the Bobbies recognized us. One or two of the older ones had been associated with the Runners and should have known us. Nevertheless, no one gave any indication they did.

When the Peeler in charge first mentioned Caddy’s name, Barbary, who was still standing near the fireplace, turned and looked in another direction, as though he was not part of the gathering. Barkis hopped from his chair and began to busy himself by clearing empty mugs from the table.

Clara tried to jump to her feet, but she was wedged in the chair so tightly it took her several twists and turns to get up. She looked back at the chair as if to blame it for being too small.

Blathers and I both started to intercede in the arrest, but a look from Barbary cautioned us to remain uninvolved. We looked away in the same direction as the cab driver.

Clara said to the police, “We didn’t know he was a revolutionary. We don’t like that kind in here. Get him out, quick.”

Caddy Quale went peaceably.
