Chapter 43
Caddy Quale, in his disguise as an undertaker’s assistant, started to open the door to Barbary’s cab. “Hey, ya darky, ya can’t ride in this cab.”
“Saints preserve us, don’t ya be knowing your own good friend and employer, now, ya sassy man, ya.”
Barbary wasn’t sure he heard Caddy’s voice coming out of the black man trying to get in his cab, but Blathers was right behind him. He gave Caddy a shove onto the seat, and yelled, “Make for the Black Lion. Quick!”
Barbary jerked the reins, and the cab set off toward the center of London. The route led back past the prison, where the gatekeeper had already fallen asleep in a chair tilted against the end of the prison wall, apparently contented that all of his body parts were safe.
