Back on Broadway, baby!

“And so we return again! Unexpectedly!”

The Knights who say Ni!

Opening Knight, St. James Theatre

Incredibly, Spamalot is back on Broadway. And this time my tears are not just of laughter. Standing amidst a blissed-out crowd who are on their feet happily singing my song “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” I feel tears coursing down my cheeks and I weep unashamedly for Mike, for Casey, for Bill, for those we have lost like the wonderful Michael McGrath, and the unexpected joy of the return of the show we first opened almost twenty years ago. Gazing around at the standing ovation, with Tania beside me, of course wearing her beautiful purple amethyst ring, and my daughter Lily with Charlie and a handmade Holy Grail handbag, I feel so lucky to have lived and survived to see Spamalot back on Broadway at the magnificent St. James Theatre. Yes, I thought they would laugh—the show has been making ’em laugh round the world for two decades—but what I had not expected was the way I would feel, tearing up so many times during the evening, nor the way Broadway greeted our return with packed houses and rave notices which, to my amazement, were even better this time round. As the gold confetti fell from the ceiling, and the audience cheered and sang along, I was moved by the thought that this show will still be bringing joy and laughter to people long after I’m gone.

That is a very powerful feeling.
