Ian Morgan Cron
My grateful appreciation to my literary agent, Kathy Helmers, my editors, Jana Riess and Allison Rieck, for courage under fire, Jim and Solveig Chaffee and Chaffee Management, Mike and Gail Hyatt for friendship and hospitality, Karen and Steve Anderson for their love and the beautiful Cottage on Main in Franklin, Tennessee, Joe Stabile, Michael and Julianne Cusick, Bishop Ian Douglas, Don Chaffer, Anthony Skinner, Chris and Laurel Scarlata, Melissa Greene, Chuck Royce, Rob Mathes, Shauna and Aaron Niequist, Laura Addis, Josh Graves, Hunter Mobley, Steve and Debbie Taylor, Jenny and Sam Owen, Paul and Lisa Michalski, Jim Lemler and my Christ Church Greenwich family, Jeff Crosby, Cindy Bunch and all the good folks at IVP, and all who shared their stories with me that I might share them with you.
Suzanne Stabile
Most of all I want to thank my husband, Joe Stabile. His unending commitment to me and to our marriage is both honoring and challenging as he insists that we commit our lives to building the kingdom. Our children, son-in-laws and grandchildren are my motivation for wanting to do my part to make the world a better place, and I am so grateful for each of them. Thank you Joey and Billy, Will, Sam; Jenny and Cory, Noah, Elle, Piper; Joel, Joley; and B. J. and Devon for oh so much!
Father Richard Rohr invited me into the study of this ancient wisdom, so whatever my teaching has become is easily traced back to him. There are no words to adequately thank the thousands of people who have shared their weekends and their stories with me over the past twenty-five years. They are the reason the information I gathered about the Enneagram became wisdom.
I would have never imagined myself coauthoring a book like this, but Ian Cron did, and I am grateful. His respect for my work with the Enneagram and his way of making room for me in this project has given me a new energy for the challenges that are yet to come. Thanks to Sheryl Fullerton for being my literary agent and, of far greater importance, for being my friend. I’m grateful for Kathy Helmers for representing us to IVP. Special thanks to our editor, Cindy Bunch, and to Jeff Crosby and Andrew Bronson and all at IVP who helped us find our way as coauthors and who helped me find a place to stand as a novice in the world of publishing.
There are so many people who give their time and energy to the work of Life in the Trinity Ministry. Carolyn Teel, my best friend for forty-six years; Mike George, Joe’s best friend for fifty-two years, and his wife Patsy; Ann Leick, The Community of Life in the Trinity Ministry, Cindy Short, B. C. and Karen Hosch, Dr. John and Stephanie Burk, Tanya Dohoney, John Brimm, Tom Hoekstra, Jane Henry and Luci Neuman, who dreamed of a future for LTM that we could hardly imagine. Dr. Shirley Corbitt and Marge Buchanan, thank you for supporting me for literally all of my adult life. Meredith Inman, Laura Addis and Jim Chaffee for all the work you do on my behalf; and Dr. Bob Hughes, thank you for insisting that I believe I am wanted.
I am, and have been, well loved by many people who encourage me to live my life well and to do what is mine to do in regard to teaching the Enneagram. To each of you, I am so very thankful.
And finally to P. F. Chang’s. When Ian called and suggested we write this book I took a few days for some discernment and prayer before giving him an answer. During that time Joe and I ate dinner at the Chang’s in Dallas. My fortune cookie contained this message: “You are a lover of books. You should write a book some day.”
Respectfully and with gratitude we want to acknowledge and express our thanks to these great teachers who have led the way for us and for so many others in the study of the Enneagram. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for the ways in which their insights have helped our work.
