13 On the Computer
If you’re using a Korean computer, you’ll have to put up with a couple more buttons on the keyboard and a lot more Korean on your screen. While you can probably navigate a computer based on the icons alone, it’s nice to have a bit of vocabulary as well!

GREAT, SO HOW DO I TYPE IN KOREAN?
On Korean keyboards, there’s a button to the right of the space bar marked 한/영 (han/yeong—the first syllables of Korean and English in the local language, respectively). As you might have guessed, hitting this will toggle between Korean letters and English letters.

Note that while Koreans are familiar with Facebook and Twitter, they aren’t yet widely used within Korea, with most Koreans preferring to use native Korean social networking sites. At the time of this writing these include Cyworld (싸이월드, “ssa-ee-wool-deu”), Me2Day (미투데이, “Mee-too-deh-ee,” which is usually just written in English anyway) and the messaging program Kakaotalk (카카오톡, “kah-cow-toke”). The first two are essentially blogging sites (think Tumblr) while Kakaotalk is a free instant messaging app that is also available in English.

TEXTING
Note: as with English slang, Korean text-talk goes out of date really quickly. However, the expressions below have all been around for at least a few years and show some staying power.
~ makes your sentence sound friendlier; no exact English equivalent, but sort of like a smiley
I like you
chohahae
choh-ah-hay
좋아해~
^^ smiley face :)
I like you
chohahae
choh-ah-hay

ㅠㅠ sad face (meant to look like tears streaming down from the eyes)
I have to go now
nan chigeum kaya dwae
nahn chigeum kay-yah dway
난 지금 가야 돼 ㅠㅠ
ㅎㅎ, ㅋㅋ both represent laughter (think lol or hehehe). The more letters, the more laughter.
That was so funny! LOL!
Cham utkyeo!
Cham oot-kyaw!
참 웃겨 ㅎㅎ 참 웃겨 ㅋㅋ
ㅇㅇ indicates agreement—an abbreviation of 응 (eung), which means “yeah”.
“That was so funny, right?” “Yeah!”
“Cham utkiji kkk” “Eung”
“Cham oot-keejee kkk” “Eung”
“참웃기지 ㅋㅋㅋ” “ㅇㅇ”
; indicates embarrassment—the more semicolons, the more embarrassment
I failed my test;;;
Naega shiheome ddeoleojyeosseo ;;;
Nay-gah shee-um-ay ddull-uhjyuhsso.
내가 시험에 떨어졌어 ;;;
헐, 헉 expressions of astonishment, sort of like “Whoa!” or “Wow!” Not just used in texting, but in speech as well.
Wow! You failed the test?
Heol/heok! Shiheome ddeoleojyeosseo?
Hull/huck! Shee-um-ay ddulluh-jyuhsso?
헐! 시험에 떨어졌어?
짱 the best, the greatest. Not just used in texting, but in speech as well.
Girls’ Generation rock!
Sonyeo shidaeneun jjangida!
Soh-nyuh shee-day-neun jjahng-ee-dah!
소녀시대는 짱이다!
꽝 the worst, a total failure. Not just used in texting, but in speech as well.
That date sucked.
Geu deiteuneun ggwangieosseo.
Geu deh-ee-teu-neun ggwahngee-uhsso.
그 데이트는 꽝이었어.
You can also add ㅁ, ㅇ to the end of your sentences while texting; this makes them sound “cute”. They often follow the 요 at the end of a polite sentence, and can follow other vowels at the end of words as well.
I know.
Alasseoyong./Alasseoyom.
ahlassoyong./Ahlassoyom.
알았어용.
You busy?
Neo chigeum bappang?/ bappam?
Naw chigeum bappahng?/ bappahm?
너 지금 바빰?
Similarly, 네 (yes, “nay”) is often written as 넵 (“nep”) to sound cute.
