BASIC THINGS TO KNOW

WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT?

Did you know you’ll sleep for a total of about 32 years during your entire lifetime? And yet, most people in today’s modern society are sleep deprived. Russell Foster, a circadian neuroscientist (whoa, that’s a cool-sounding occupation), has been studying sleep for years, specifically researching its impact on our brains. He has found that those who get the proper amount of sleep (ideally eight hours per night—most of us are sleeping only six and a half hours per night) are three times better at decision-making, which leads to greater creativity and concentration, better social skills, and improved health. Another interesting finding is that those who get five hours of sleep or less per night are 50% more likely to be obese, as a sleep-deprived body tends to crave carbs for more energy. To get the best sleep possible, Dr. Foster suggests reducing your light exposure at least half an hour before going to bed, turning off all devices, cutting off caffeine early in the day, making your room slightly cool, and sleeping in as dark a room as possible.
