While organizing your clothes isn’t always the most fun task in the world, it will save you a ton of time in the morning and enable you to dress more creatively because you’ll be able to see all of your options at a glance. Here are my personal tips and tricks for keeping that closet in check.
I am admittedly a type A closet freak. I love to have everything super-organized, yet out where I can see it. If I can’t see it, I usually forget about it. Thus, here are some rules for things to fold and things to hang.
Undergarments
T-shirts
Jeans
Athletic apparel
Sweats/loungewear
Sweaters
Everything else
Tip from the Co:
Use shower ring/ hooks on your closet rod for an easy way to hang and display scarves and bags.
If you haven’t worn it in a year, throw it out! The best organization is not having to struggle through junk to find what you really love.
Use the back of a door to maximize space. Add small hanger hooks for grab-and-go items (i.e., a jacket, scarves, etc.).
Amortize. Buy quality things that will last a long time. Say no to cheap fashion. When you do that, you’ll end up with fewer things and a cleaner closet.
I go to local thrift shops and buy vintage suitcases to store winter clothes up high on shelves without the “clutter” look that usually comes with stacking piles of sweaters. They cost just a few dollars (I bought three vibrantly colored ones for $5 once!) and can hold a whole lot of sweaters! Bonus: They don’t smell like mothballs and are within easy reach on a chilly summer beach night.
Most women (and men!) don’t realize how important tailoring is, or where their clothes should be tailored. Once done properly, not only will a tailored piece of clothing bring out your best bodily features, but it will become a piece you wear over and over again because it fits just right. Here are the most common rules for tailoring your clothes:
If I could give one piece of advice to women that would help them to dress themselves better, it would be to understand what body type they have. Here are the most common shapes:
A study of more than 6,000 women conducted at North Carolina State University in 2005 revealed that 46% of them were banana-shaped, just over 20% were pear-shaped, just under 14% were apple-shaped, and only 8% were hourglass-shaped. The hourglass is normally accepted as the “ideal” female shape in Western countries.
The “Rule of Thirds” is a good way of making sure that the outfit you’re wearing accentuates your body as best it can. As you can see from the illustrations, you want to be sure that you’re emphasizing either your top third or your bottom third. Try not to wear a half-and-half style, or you will cut off some of your best features.
Note from Brit:
Velvet hangers take up way less room in your closet and keep your clothes from getting those terrible hanger dents in the shoulders. I promise you will never go back to wire or plastic hangers once you go velvet.
